The Steve Alder on Becoming Mr Universe
Becoming the Mr. Universe is like every professional bodybuilders dream. Of course, it really takes a lot of training to get that title. However, it looks like Steve Alder is on the verge on getting it.
A PERSONAL trainer has the chance of becoming Mr Universe, after winning three titles in a month.
Bodybuilder Steve Alder was watched by 1,500 people when he won the highest category – class three – of the Mr Britain contest in Southport last week.
Just weeks before, the 37-year-old scooped the Mr International and best overall titles at the Pendle Valley tournament.
Steve, a freelance trainer at Powerbeck Sports, in Wigan Road, Leigh, and FX Leisure in Lowton, has now qualified as a contender in the prestigious Mr Universe contest in five months.
“I’m really pleased, but I was overawed at the time,” he said.
“It is a dream come true just to take part in the Mr Universe competition. To win it would be unbelievable, surreal and phenomenal.
“That’s about the highest level there is.”
Steve, a former rugby player for Golborne Parkside’s premier division team, started bodybuilding in 2005, initially as a way to motivate his clients.
In that year, he won five contests, but in 2008 he took a break from competing to concentrate on his career.
Steve’s training regime before a competition lasts around 20 weeks, when he works out for three hours every day.
This also includes some sacrifices to his social life.
“I haven’t had a drink since January,” he added.
“I’m on a strict diet seven days a week. I’m having a little bit of a break now to celebrate, but I’ll be training hard in four weeks’ time.”
